brief description of the conceptual basis of this work
in his series titled "his*story" rainey borrows from the formal vernacular of great historical works of art. each photograph is a reenactment of a famous figurative painting or sculpture. he uses himself as an actor, and pairs himself only with male partners. each of the male characters is clad in the generic uniform of drab business suit, white shirt and tie.
rainey seeks fo question and explore issues of personal identity as influenced by cultural notions of class, gender, race, age and sexual orientation. instead of drawing on decades of feminist theory, rainey wishes to reveal what happens when traditionally female iconography is removed altogether. as a gay man, rainey shares with womene the experience of patriarchal domination and oppression and thereby offers another angle to criticism. by replacing the females with male actors in traditional patriarchal garb. rainey subverts the idea that woman are the object of the cultural gaze.
